Spencer-Blaetz Sets Wins Record as Field Hockey Blanks Ramapo 5-0

Mahwah, N.J. – Head Coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz of the Stevens field hockey team notched her 83rd career win to become the program leader as the Ducks downed Ramapo College 5-0 on Saturday.

Spencer-Blaetz, who is now 83-52, surpassed Jessica Reed, who guided the team to 82 victories from 2004-2010.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It was all Ducks from the jump, as they outshot the Roadrunners 10-0 in the first stanza. Stevens nearly broke through in the eighth minute. Makenna Quigley had a shot off a corner that was cleared off the line by a Ramapo defender. Gabi Moroney followed with consecutive shots that were stopped by the Ramapo keeper but were rewarded with 2:13 left in the frame. Quigley fired a shot that was redirected in front by Moroney, making it 1-0.

In the second stanza, Julia Zatyko rang a shot off the post 1:49 into the period before having a pair of attempts denied by the goalie. Taylor Brooks doubled the lead in the 20th minute, potting an unassisted marker. The Ducks were unable to find another goal and led 2-0 after 30 minutes despite outshooting Ramapo 24-0 in the half.

It took only 36 seconds in the third quarter for the Ducks to add to their margin. Off a corner, Sophia Cozza found Moroney, and the junior netted her second goal of the game. The Roadrunners registered their second defensive save of the afternoon in the 34th minute, as Quigley was stopped on the doorstep. Brooks added her second marker of the game in the 42nd minute, stretching the lead to four after three quarters.

Stevens capped off the scoring in the fourth quarter, with Jess Kopernick scoring in the 53rd minute as Cozza added her second helper.

FROM THE FIELD (HEAD COACH MEREDITH SPENCER-BLAETZ)
  • "This was a really great team win to open up the 2024 season. We showed some of the things that we have been working on in the past 2 weeks and started to settle into our systems. There is so much potential in this group and I'm excited to get back to work next week!"
  • "Celebrating the wins is truly a testament to all the young women I have had the pleasure to coach. The program has grown into a family and seeing the amount of effort these players put in day in and day out is what makes me feel the most pride. Excited to go onward and upward!"
