Thompson, Vespucci Tally Second Half Goals

Ewing, N.J. – Seniors Terry Thompson and Emerico Vespucci of the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team netted second-half goals to lead the Ducks to a 2-0 win over The College of New Jersey on Saturday.

Graduate student goalkeeper Guillermo Castaneda-Chang made two saves to notch his second victory of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The two sides battled for possession in the first, with the two teams combining for three shots over the 24 minutes. Stevens had the best opportunities, as Omar Martinez was robbed on a header off a corner kick in the 19th minute before Dylan Maund was stopped 26 seconds later. The Ducks continued to hunt for the opening marker but goalkeeper Colin Rentner denied Luca Campbell in the 24th minute.

The Stevens defense was the story in the first half, limiting the Lions to two shots and none on target. The Ducks held a slim 4-2 edge in shots while attempting the only two corner kicks of the frame.

The Ducks broke through with their first shot on goal in the second half. In the 63rd minute, Thompson ripped a shot into the back of the net off a loose ball, snapping the 0-0 game. Staked to the lead, Stevens doubled their margin in the 77th minute. After being awarded a penalty kick, Vespucci stepped up to the spot and converted, making it 2-0.

The Lions peppered the Ducks late in the game and had a header off a corner kick glance off the post. In the 79th minute, Castaneda-Chang preserved the clean sheet with a save before denying the Lions in the 87th minute to earn the shutout victory.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Thompson has scored in consecutive games and matched his season total in goals from last season.
• Vespucci netted his first goal of the season and the eighth of his career. His last marker came against King's on October 18, 2023.
• Castaneda-Chang registered his second victory of the season and his second shutout of the year.

FROM THE SIDELINES
"Overall a very solid performance - truly a team effort as you can see by how many players we used today. A local derby against TCNJ is always a tough game and they were very well organized and made it difficult for us at times. We look forward to a home midweek against against a very well coached SUNY New Paltz  program on Wednesday." - Head Coach Dale Jordan.

UP NEXT
The Ducks host New Paltz on Wednesday, with the game time at the DeBaun Athletic Complex scheduled for 7 pm. The two sides last met on September 4, 2011, as New Paltz registered a 1-0 victory.
