No. 25 Field Hockey Knocks Off Eastern, 2-1

St. Davids, Pa. – The No. 25 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team knocked off Eastern University 2-1 in non-conference action on Friday afternoon.

Senior Emily Smart and graduate student Julia Zatyko netted goals for Stevens (5-2), who snapped a two-game losing skid. Abby Hakes scored for Eastern (2-4).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks controlled the first quarter, taking all 13 shots. Stevens nearly broke through in the 10th minute, but an Eagles defender cleared Kylee Scherer's shot off the goalline. Molly DiCampli registered consecutive shots on goal in the 11th minute but was denied by Eastern goalkeeper Angelina Catania. The Ducks broke through with 1:20 remaining in the opening quarter, as Smart registered her fourth marker of the year.

Off a corner in the 22nd minute, Makenna Quigley looked to double the lead, but the stick of defender Paige Brouse denied her attempt. The Ducks added to their margin in the 25th minute as Zatyko deposited a pass from Sophia Cozza into the back of the goal, marking it 2-0. The Eagles cut the lead in half with 2:22 left in the period as Hakes tallied her first goal of the season.

Stevens held a 22-2 advantage in shots over the first half while taking eight of nine penalty corners.

The Ducks continued to pepper the Eagles with shots, registering six shots on target in the third period. Sarah Korczukowski and Lauren Flynn had their tries stopped by Eastern defenders before crossing the line, while Catania denied Gabi Moroney and Cozza. Stevens didn't let up and hunted for a third marker but were unable to push a goal across. Quigley was rejected by a defender for a defensive save in the 48th minute as the Ducks registered eight shots on frame in the fourth stanza. They limited Eastern to one shot in the second half, preserving the 2-1 victory.
