No. 24 Field Hockey Edged In Overtime By Washington & Lee

Lexington, Va. – The No. 24 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team scored twice in quick succession early in the second half but conceded the tying goal late in regulation before dropping a 3-2 contest in overtime to Washington and Lee University Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a defensive battle through the first 30 minutes, which featured six shots on target in total, things turned up several notches offensively early in the second half. Stevens (5-4) scored on its first two shots of the third quarter, sophomore Jess Kopernick notching her second goal of the season less than 30 seconds in, and senior Sarah Korczukowski adding to the lead off a penalty corner feed from Kylee Scherer less than two minutes later.

Over a four-minute stretch that began less than a minute after Korczukowski's goal, Washington and Lee (6-2) put four shots on goal, but Stevens' junior goalkeeper Lily Wierzbicki kept them all out of the cage before the Generals finally broke through on Betty Boatwright's goal, halving the Ducks' lead. Wierzbicki recorded six saves during the quarter.
The Ducks held that one-goal lead into the final minute of regulation, holding Washington and Lee without a shot for nearly 10 minutes during the fourth quarter. As time ticked away, Noelle Kokolis knotted things at two, sending the game to overtime. Eight minutes into the first extra session, Margaret Cover notched the game-winner for the Generals.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Kopernick's goal was her first since the season opener on August 31 against Ramapo.
  • Stevens played its third overtime game of the season, surpassing its two extra session games from the 2023 regular season.
  • Wierzbicki's 12 saves were three more than any game this season and matched her career high set on November 8 of last year against Cortland in the NCAA Division III Championship.
