Martinez Scores Twice As Men's Soccer Tops Chapman, 2-1

Hoboken, N.J. – Sophomore Omar Martinez scored twice to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team past Chapman University on Friday night.

Martinez netted goals in the 35th and 68th minute for Stevens (1-1-1) as Reed Leidlein scored for Chapman (1-1-0).

HOW IT HAPPENED
Chapman goalkeeper Alex Glynn was the difference in the opening period, turning away several high-leverage scoring chances from Stevens. Glynn made saves on Luca Campbell and Emerico Vespucci from in tight within the first 15 minutes of the game. The Stevens defense limited the number of opportunities, as Chapman had just two shots in the first 34 minutes and just one on frame.

Martinez broke through for the opening tally in the 35th minute. Nick Lapczynski intercepted a pass in enemy territory, and the ball bounced onto the foot of Dylan Maund. The graduate student sent a cross that glanced off a Panther defender but right to Martinez. He tucked a left-footed shot just inside the near post, making it 1-0 Stevens. Stevens had two additional shots on goal late in the period but could not capitalize.

Stevens held a commanding 10-2 advantage in shots in the first half, but Glynn kept it 1-0 with six saves.

The guests opened the second stanza with the first three shots and were rewarded with a goal in the 59th minute. Off a clearance off a corner, Conner Kilde lofted a pass to Leidlein, who popped a try over Guillermo Castaneda-Chang to level the game at one. The two sides traded off-target shots midway through the period, and Stevens regained the lead at the 67:30 mark.

Castaneda-Chang started the play with a deep, driving kick that went to midfield, and the pass flicked on to Lapczynski by Matthew Murillo. Lapczynski fed Martinez, and the sophomore made a defender miss before rifling a shot into the top corner of the net, giving Stevens a 2-1 lead. The Stevens defense made it hold up as they did not surrender a shot on goal the remainder of the night.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Martinez netted the first two markers of his collegiate career.
• Maund's assist on the opening goal was the third of his career and first since assisting on Fritz Kabeiseman's game-winner against Lebanon Valley College in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championship Game last fall.
• Castenda-Chang made one stop to earn his first victory as Duck.

FROM THE FIELD
"Incredible to be playing at home in front of the fans again ! It was high end D3 soccer on show - credit to Chapman and their staff on how well coached and talented their team was. So happy for Omar (Martinez) to get on the score sheet after such adversity last season. Was truly a team effort tonight - our bench was electric. We look forward to playing at home again on Sunday against another very tough opponent." Head Coach Dale Jordan

UP NEXT
