Hoboken, N.J. – Dorothy Loffredo and
Lucy Alberici combined for 22 points, two of five players with at least six points as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team won its fifth straight game with a 48-39 victory Saturday afternoon over Misericordia in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Misericordia (3-10, 1-1) opened the scoring with a layup, layups from
Olivia Schubiger and
Audrey Kehoe (after two offensive rebounds) put the Ducks up 4-2.
Leyla Castro knocked one down from distance and Loffredo followed with a fast break layup, forcing an early Cougars timeout with the visitors down 9-2. Castro and Schubiger each added a fast break layup for Stevens (8-5, 2-0), who carried a 13-8 lead to the second quarter.
Alberici opened the second quarter with four straight points via a layup (off her own offensive rebound) and two free throws. Loffredo answered a Cougar three with a coast-to-coast layup, then started a 5-0 run with a jumper that
Katherine Bogutsky capped with a left corner three. After Misericordia answered with a three, a Loffredo layup started another 5-0 run – capped by an
Isabella Duval three-pointer – as the Ducks ran to the locker room with a 29-17 lead.
Free throws from Alberici and a jumper by Loffredo had the Ducks up 10, 33-23, just past the midway point of the third quarter. Misericordia worked the margin back down to six, but three free throws between Loffredo and Castro plus a last-minute layup by Alberici kept the Ducks comfortably in front, 38-29, heading to the fourth.
Alberici added a jumper in the opening seconds of the fourth, sandwiched between a Misericordia free throw and three-pointer, as the Cougars trimmed the Stevens lead back to seven. After several empty possessions on both ends, Schubiger knocked down a jumper and Castro pushed the lead back into double digits with another three.
With the lead still 12 halfway through, Duval banked in a three from the right wing, giving the Ducks their largest lead of the day with 4:51 left. The Ducks did not score the rest of the way, but limited Misericordia to just three two-point baskets the rest of the way, setting a new season-best mark for fewest points allowed in a game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Kehoe grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, eight on the offensive glass.
- Loffredo hit double figures for the fourth time in the last six games after hitting the mark just twice in the first seven games of the season.
- Defensively, the Ducks committed just eight fouls, a season low. Misericordia's six free throw attempts were the fewest by a Stevens opponent since FDU-Florham on February 1, 2023.
