Women's Basketball Drops MAC Freedom Home Tilt to Arcadia

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Olivia Schubiger finished with a career-high 18 points, but the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team could not overcome early foul trouble and a strong shooting second half by Arcadia in an 80-61 defeat Wednesday night in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom action at Canavan Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Dorothy Loffredo and Audrey Kehoe had early baskets for Stevens (8-6, 2-1) as the teams traded the lead back and forth four times in the first five minutes before a pair of three-pointers from Isabella Duval put Stevens up 14-9 at the 3:36 mark. Leyla Castro made it an eight-point game with another three on the ensuing possession, but the Ducks did not score the rest of the quarter as Arcadia reeled off eight straight to tie.

Kehoe ended the scoring drought and gave the Ducks an 18-17 lead in the opening seconds of the second, but the Knights took the lead back on a three the following possession, while the Ducks underwent another 3+ minute scoring drought before a Schubiger jumper cut a 24-20 Arcadia lead in half at the 5:52 mark.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Lucy Alberici and three-pointer by Duval kept Stevens within one, 29-28, but Arcadia (8-6, 2-1) again closed the quarter strong with seven straight, carrying a 36-28 lead to the locker room; the Knights drew 12 fouls and made 11 of 13 from the line in the opening 20.

After playing just seven minutes in the first half with foul trouble, Loffredo opened the scoring in the third quarter, but back-to-back Arcadia three-pointers pushed the Knights' lead to double figures, 42-30. With the score 46-36 after a Kehoe putback at the 6:39 mark, both teams went scoreless for the next two minutes and without a field goal for nearly four until an Arcadia three-pointer put them up 49-38 with 2:38 left; that lead grew to 14, 55-41, by the end of the period.

Katherine Bogutsky, Alberici, and Duval all knocked down three-balls in the fourth and Schubiger finished the period with eight points, but Arcadia shot better than 50 percent from the floor and went 10-for-14 from the charity stripe while maintaining at least a 12-point lead throughout the quarter to close out the win.
