Hoboken, N.J. – Kyle Maddison had 19 points and
Matt Leming dropped a career-high 17 points in just 17 minutes as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team remained perfect in Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play with a 92-52 win over DeSales Wednesday night at Canavan Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Harmehar Chhabra and Maddison got the Ducks started with a pair of layups in the opening minute for a 4-0 lead;
Jack Spellman pushed the lead to five, 7-2, with a three-pointer as Stevens (13-3, 5-0 MACF) hit its first three from the floor.
After the Ducks missed on their next three shots, Maddison ended the cold spell with a three-pointer, putting Stevens up 10-4 at the 16:27 mark. The Ducks maintained at least a two-possession lead until a DeSales three made it 12-11 just under four minutes later.
The Bulldogs eventually took their first lead of the night, 16-14, on a three-pointer at the 11:06 mark. After Stevens briefly went out in front, DeSales took the lead right back at the 8:10 mark, but went scoreless over the next 5:21 while the Ducks reeled off 12 straight points.
After a Chhabra layup put the Ducks up one, back-to-back three-pointers from
Mike Goodall and
Tommy Scholl (24 seconds apart) put Stevens up 29-22 and forced a DeSales timeout. Out of the timeout, both teams went scoreless more than two minutes before a pair of Maddison buckets capped the run. After DeSales briefly cut the lead back under 10, 33-24, Stevens reeled off another eight straight, capped by a pair of Leming three-pointers; in all, the Ducks ended the half on a 20-2 run.
The Ducks conceded three points from their 41-24 halftime cushion in the opening minute of the second half following a DeSales jumper and three-pointer, but answered with a pair of 12-0 runs, all before the 11:30 mark of the half.
Maddison started the first run with a layup, Scholl followed with a three-pointer, Maddison added two baskets, and Spellman made three free throws across a pair of trips to the foul line.
After the Bulldogs ended the first spurt, Leming knocked down a pair from beyond the arc during the second, with Maddison and Coughlan combining for the other three baskets, with the Ducks taking a 67-33 lead.
Stevens eventually opened a 42-point lead, with
Will Kwasigroch and
Peter Gray knocking down their first three-pointers as Ducks in the game's closing minutes.
