No. 3 Men's Volleyball Outlasts No. 8 Carthage In Five Sets

Kenosha, Wis. – The No. 3 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team outlasted No. 8 Carthage College 3-2 during the FrogJump Invitational on Friday night.

The Ducks (6-0) topped the Firebirds (5-2) 26-24, 25-21, 22-25, 15-25, 15-10 to claim the match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens fell behind 7-3 early in the opening frame before a 5-1 run spearheaded by four straight points from Sebastian Huyke brought it to 12-11. During the rally, Ryan Schmid and Carver Weirick put down kills as Koby Sherman added a pair. After a side out, Stevens reeled off three more markers, taking the first advantage of set one. The Firebirds pulled even at 16 before an Alex Olcott kill put Stevens up 20-19. Carthage responded with four of the next six before a Greg Li kill and an ace from Huyke made it 24-23 Stevens. The hosts fought off one set point; however, consecutive kills from Sherman gave Stevens the last two points to claim the opener.

The second set went back and forth, featuring 11 ties until a 12-12 break. Tyler Hoke pinned down a set from Nick Schmidt, and an attack error gave Stevens a 14-12 lead, which was
the first multi-point advantage for either side in the period. The Firebirds pulled even at 14, but four straight kills from Stevens, including two from Schmid, extended the Ducks lead to 18-14. The margin grew to six on a Sherman kill before Carthage managed to get within two on a 5-1 spurt. Back-to-back kills from Phillip Bone brought up a set point, and Stevens took the second frame after the teams swapped service errors.

Early ties were the story of the third stanza once again, with nine ties before Carthage tallied six consecutive markers. Olcott and Sherman paused the run with a kill, but the home side used a 5-2 run to extend the gap to seven. Stevens didn't back down, scoring nine of the
next 13 points to get within two at 24-22. The Firebirds clinched set three on a kill, getting within 2-1.

The fourth period saw Stevens fall behind early and never lead or tie the period. A service error pulled them as close as two at 10-8, but the hosts embarked on a set-swinging 10-3 run to break the frame open. The home side finished off the fourth set with three of the last four markers, forcing a fifth and deciding set in the process.

With the final set level at four, Schmidt tallied four points as the Ducks took advantage of four unforced errors from the home team. An ace from Li pushed Stevens up by three at 10-7, but the Firebirds answered with two points. Brandon Rogers and Sherman tacked on kills before a Stevens attack error made it 12-10 Ducks.
That would be the final point Carthage notched, as Hoke registered two of the last three points on kills to send Stevens to a victory.
