Hoboken, N.J. – The No. 11 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team clinched the top seed in next week's Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championship with a 3-1 victory over Misericordia University Wednesday afternoon.
The Ducks (15-2, 6-0 MAC Freedom) outshot the Cougars (14-3, 5-1) 20-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens controlled play throughout the first quarter, attempting all four shots, including two on goal. The Ducks capitalized on a penalty corner midway through the frame to take a 1-0 lead.
Lauren Flynn inserted the ball, which moved around the circle before
Gabi Moroney's initial shot was stopped by Sarah Bogina. The rebound caromed to Flynn, who buried the follow-up for the early advantage.
Play remained largely in the midfield during the second quarter, with Stevens generating the only two shots in the period to maintain its one-goal edge at halftime.
The Ducks turned up the pressure in the third quarter, earning seven penalty corners and firing nine shots.
Aleah Dinmore had three attempts, including one cleared off the line by a defender in the 33rd minute. After Dinmore hit the post in the 40th minute, Stevens kept the ball in the attacking end. Off a scrum in front, Moroney found
Jenna Piantieri, who slotted the shot past the keeper for a 2-0 advantage.
The Cougars, held without a shot through the first three quarters, fired off three in succession early in the fourth. Senior goalkeeper
Lily Wierzbicki denied all three before a foul in the circle awarded Misericordia a penalty stroke. Madison Lasinski converted to cut the deficit in half. Stevens responded with an insurance goal with 4:08 remaining, as
Brooke Hughes worked the ball along the end line and popped a pass to
Sophia Cozza, who finished to seal the win.
