Owings Mills, Md. – The No. 9 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team fell in overtime on the road Wednesday afternoon to No. 25 Stevenson by a 3-2 score.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks survived an early pair of penalty corners thanks in large part to a defensive save from
Lauren Flynn. Goalkeeper
Lily Wierzbicki added a pair of saves for Stevens (9-2) as things remained scoreless through the first period, but that changed quickly early in the second quarter.
First,
Molly DiCampli put away a penalty corner initially inserted by
Lauren Flynn, with
Jess Kopernick adding an assist as well. Less than 30 seconds later, Coco Wallace answered back for Stevenson (11-1), making it 1-1. Off another Stevenson penalty corner, the Ducks blocked a pair of shots five seconds apart, as things remained even heading to the halftime break.
Two minutes into the third, Stevenson went in front and were less than a minute from holding the lead into the fourth when Kopernick put home the equalizer after Mustangs' goalkeeper Jordan Vradenburgh made a pair of saves earlier in the period.
The Ducks generated a corner with 20 seconds left, but both of their potential go-ahead looks – one from
Taylor Brooks, one from DiCampli -- were blocked.
Both sides struggled to create opportunities in the final 15 minutes of regulation, as Stevens recorded the only shot of the quarter, DiCampli sending one wide with six minutes left.
In overtime,
Emilia Lopes had a shot on-target stopped by Vradenburgh three minutes in and
Sophia Cozza missed high two minutes later. Just past seven minutes gone, Stevenson found the back of the cage for the game-winner.
