HOBOKEN, N.J. – Harmehar Chhabra and
Tommy Scholl combined for 42 points, leading four players in double figures in an 84-68 victory for the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team over Chapman University (CA) Friday night from Canavan Arena.
Chhabra finished with a career-high 22 points and Scholl posted his second 20-point outing in as many games this season for Stevens (2-0).
Evan Gutkowski finished with a 10-point, 14-rebound double-double,
Kyle Maddison followed his 18-point outing in the season opener Tuesday with 17 on Friday, and
Anthony Loscalzo had nine points for the second straight game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Four different players scored the Ducks first four baskets with Loscalzo knocking down a three, Chhabra making a layup, Scholl converting a three-point play, and Gutkowski adding another layup for a 10-5 lead. Scholl knocked down a three, Chhabra added three-point plays on consecutive possessions, and the Ducks were suddenly up 19-5 thanks to an 11-0 run. Chapman worked the deficit back to 10, 23-13, but five straight points from Maddison kickstarted a 13-1 spurt, putting the Ducks up 22, 36-14 – Gutkowski had a three-point play,
Matt Leming knocked down a three, and Loscalzo closed the run with a jumper. Chapman, after starting the half just 4-for-21, made six of its final 10 from the floor, working the margin back down to 13, 42-29 at the half. Stevens finished the half shooting an even 50 percent.
Stevens kept Chapman at bay through the first 8+ minutes of the second half, but were unable to create continuous separation, with the lead fluctuating between six and 13 -- Scholl had nine of the Ducks' first 12 points of the half. With the score 53-45, Maddison reeled off five points on consecutive possessions and Chhabra added three straight layups (two off Maddison assists) as Stevens seized a 64-49 lead shortly past the midway point of the half, as part of an extended 28-13 spurt that left Stevens up 23, 81-58, with less than four minutes to play; Maddison added another seven between the 9:00 and 5:00 minute marks to keep the Ducks well in front.
As both teams cleared their benches late, Stevens put just four more on the scoreboard, but had built enough of a lead for Chapman to make a serious run late, as the Ducks collected a second straight wire-to-wire win.
