Schubiger’s Buzzer Beater Pushes Women’s Basketball Past TCNJ

Ewing, N.J. – Olivia Schubiger hit a fadeaway jumper as time expired, giving the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team a 76-74 win over TCNJ Saturday afternoon in a Garden State showdown.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens (4-1) fell behind 5-0 out of the gate and spent the next 10 minutes playing catch up. Leyla Castro had a pair of threes, Isabella Duval had five, and Schubiger had four in the first quarter, but the Lions led 24-17 through the opening 10 minutes.

The Ducks came out hot in the second quarter, with layups from Audrey Kehoe, Schubiger, and Castro pulling the Ducks within one 90 seconds in to the quarter, taking their first lead, 26-24, on a Castro three at the 8:00 mark.

Another Castro three put Stevens up five, the Ducks holding that lead the rest of the quarter; Duval and Castro ended the half with 11 points each, with CeeJay Thomas adding six.

The teams went back and forth in the third quarter, trading the lead left and right, with no team holding more than a four-point advantage at any point; TCNJ took a 55-54 lead into the fourth on a late three.

The fourth quarter played out much like the third, as neither side led by more than three through the first 8+ minutes. With 1:34 left and the Ducks up 70-69, Schubiger converted a layup, stole the ball on TCNJ's ensuing possession, and made two free throws after being fouled on a fast break, putting Stevens up 74-69 with 60 ticks left.

The Lions forced two turnovers over the following 30 seconds, knotting things at 74 with 27 seconds left. After turnovers from each side, with four seconds left, Schubiger took an in-bounds pass from Castro at the foul line extended, took two dribbles toward the baseline, and rattled one in at the buzzer before disappearing into a flock of Ducks near the free throw line.
