HOBOKEN, N.J. – Five Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball players finished with at least nine points while the team shot a season-high 50.8 percent from the court in an 82-67 win over Hunter on Tuesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens (5-1) hit five of its first six from the floor, taking a 12-0 lead less than three minutes after the opening tip –
Olivia Schubiger hit a jumper,
Dorothy Loffredo hit her first three of the year and added a layup,
Audrey Kehoe added another layup, and
Isabella Duval capped the run with a three. Layups from Kehoe and Loffredo, a pull-up from Castro, and a Duval three-pointer kept the Ducks up double digits, 21-10, at the 4:09 mark, but the Hawks closed to 26-22 at the end of the quarter. The Ducks finished the opening 10 minutes 11-for-15 from the field and 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Three Schubiger baskets and a Duval three-pointer put the Ducks up a baker's dozen, 35-22, early in the second quarter, the margin holding above 10 until two Hunter free throws pulled things within eight, 38-30, at the 2:40 mark. Two Schubiger free throws pushed things back to 10, but the Hawks cut that margin in half, 40-35, heading to the locker room.
The third quarter played out much like the first two, Stevens taking a double-digit lead and the Hawks clawing their way back in. What was a 47-35 Stevens lead at the 7:45 mark became 55-52 at the 2:29 mark, but the Ducks responded with a 10-3 spurt to close the quarter, re-taking a 10-point lead, 65-55, heading to the fourth. Four Ducks had at least four points in the third – Loffredo (seven), CeeJay Thomas (five), Schubiger and
Maya Abramson (four each)
The Hawks knocked down a three to open the fourth, but two Kehoe layups and a Loffredo pull-up left the Ducks up 13, 71-58 with 6:45 left. The Hawks pulled back to 10, 75-65, with 4:55 left and nine, 76-67, with 2:16 left, but the Ducks closed with six unanswered, with the final score standing as their largest lead of the game.
Alexa Charles finished with a 37-point, 10-rebound, 10-steal triple double for Hunter (4-2).
