Colorado Springs, Colo. – Seniors
Gabi Moroney &
Lily Wierzbicki and juniors
Sophia Cozza,
Molly DiCampli, and
Lauren Flynn of the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team were all named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Region IV First Team, as announced by the organization earlier this morning.
Cozza and Moroney both earned a second straight First Team selection, with Cozza earning a third straight All-Region selection (2023 Second Team). Fellow 2023 Second Team member Wierzbicki garnered her second career All-Region honor, while DiCampli and Flynn both made their first career All-Region teams. All five were named All-MAC Freedom First Team in November.
Moroney ended the season in the Top 5 in program history in goals and points after notching her second season with at least 16 goals, just the fourth player in program history to do so. Moroney scored twice in the 5-1 win over No. 9 Rowan, added hat tricks against both Eastern and King's, and scored in the NCAA Tournament against Amherst.
Wierzbicki started all 21 games, posting a goals-against average under 0.90 with a near-0.800 save percentage, allowing one goal or fewer 17 times. The Davis, Calif. recorded 15 saves while allowing just two goals combined in the Top 10 wins over York and Rowan as the Ducks started the year 8-0, and made nine saves in a MAC Freedom Semifinal win over Lebanon Valley, part of a nine-game winning streak leading up to the NCAA Tournament.
Cozza recorded a third straight 7+ goal, 20+ point season, scoring a personal-best 10 goals despite taking more than 20 fewer shots than each of her first two seasons as a Duck. Cozza notched the game-winning goal against then-No. 10 York, a two-goal five-assist effort against Swarthmore, a two-goal outing against Eastern, a two-assist day against King's, and a three-point regular season capper against FDU-Florham.
DiCampli scored six times during the season (three of them game-winners), while assisting on seven more, including the eventual winning goal in the MAC Freedom Championship against Misericordia. All six goals came in consecutive games on three separate occasions, including an eventual game-winner against Widener, a three-point outing/game-winner against William Paterson, and a double-overtime winner against DeSales.
Flynn was the MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Year, Flynn was one of just four players in the conference with at least four defensive saves during the year, showing as much prowess offensively as defensively, finishing the regular season with seven goals and 25 points, adding a goal in the MAC Freedom Semifinal win over Lebanon Valley and an assist in the NCAA Tournament against Amherst.
