Castro Nets 1,000th Career Point as Women's Basketball Cruises Past Brooklyn

Brooklyn, N.Y. – Senior guard Leyla Castro of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team became the 14th player in program history to score 1,000 career points as the Ducks topped Brooklyn College 61-38 on Tuesday night.

Ceejay Thomas led all scorers with 13 points to pace Stevens (7-2), while Brooklyn (6-2) did not place a player in double figures.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite a low-scoring first quarter that featured just eight total points, Castro crossed the 1,000-point plateau with 30 seconds remaining in the frame. She converted a layup through contact and completed the three-point play to send Stevens into the second quarter with a 6-2 edge. The Ducks held Brooklyn scoreless for the final 7:26 of the period, limiting the Bulldogs to 1-for-18 shooting.

The drought continued into the second, as Stevens netted the first four points and kept the Bulldogs off the board for the opening 4:23. Brooklyn closed within four before Thomas scored on a layup off a feed from classmate Maya Abramson. Thomas' bucket sparked a 5-0 run that pushed the margin to 20-11, but the hosts scored the final three points of the half to pull within 20-14 at the break.

Although the Ducks led by just six, the defense was dominant, holding Brooklyn to five made field goals over the first 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs opened the third with a basket to get within four, but senior Audrey Kehoe responded with five straight points. Her mini-run ignited a 7-0 spurt, capped by an Olivia Schubiger jumper off a Castro assist, to extend the lead to double digits. Stevens then broke the game open with a 14-2 run that included a pair of triples from Isabella Duval. Abramson scored with one second left in the third to send the Ducks into the fourth with a 20-point cushion.

The sides traded baskets in the final period, with Stevens stretching the lead to a game-high 25 on two Thomas free throws with 6:31 left. Brooklyn never got closer than 20 the rest of the way.
