WASHINGTON, D.C. – Victor Schilleci finished 2-for-3,
Chip Krese reached base three times, and
Evan Pravato slugged a home run, but Ithaca scored in three straight innings and shut down the Ducks late as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team dropped its 2025 season opener Saturday by a final of 3-2.
How it Happened
Stevens had two on with one out in the top of the first following a Schilleci single and Krese hit by pitch, but a strikeout and groundout ended the inning. In the fourth, Krese was hit by another pitch leading off and advanced to second on an error, but the Ducks could not push the run across, ending the inning with a pair of groundouts and a strikeout.
In the bottom half of the fourth, with runners on second and third and one out after a Ducks' error, the Bombers pushed across the first run of the game (unearned) with a sacrifice fly. Stevens did noit trail for long, as Pravato went deep for the first time since March 2023 with one out in the top of the fifth.
After Ithaca went back in front with a triple, then RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, Schilleci walked leading off the sixth, moved to second on a Krese sacrifice bunt, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two out,
Garret Wolf singled up the middle to tie the game, then stole second, putting himself in scoring position, but a line out ended the threat. Ithaca went back in front in the bottom of the inning on another solo homer.
The Ducks' final scoring threat came in the eighth when, with one out, Schilleci doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a single by Krese. That was as far as either runner got, however, as Ithaca escaped the inning with a strikeout and fielder's choice. The Ducks then went down in order in the ninth.
Inside the Box Score
- Stevens starter Erik Sibbach went 4.2 innings, striking out seven without walking a batter, conceding just a lone earned run.
- Justin Doyle went 3.1 innings in relief, striking out six and allowing just three hitters to reach base.
