Baseball Falls to William Paterson on Walk-Off Sacrifice Fly

WAYNE, N.J.  – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team led 2-0 early, then rallied late to tie their Thursday afternoon game with William Paterson at three, but eventually fell 4-3 in an all-New Jersey affair.

How it Happened
Stevens put two on the board in the first, Frank Tonina driving in both Victor Schilleci and Chip Krese with a two-out opposite-field double after both walked with one out. In the bottom of the frame, the Pioneers tied it with a home run and threatened to take the early lead putting two on with one out, but Schilleci made a heads-up throw to the plate after a fielder's choice, as Tonina slapped the tag a runner trying to score from second on a ground ball that never left the infield.

Five scoreless innings followed, despite several scoring threats from each side. William Paterson put a runner on second with no one out in the second, but Stevens starter Justin Doyle stranded him there with a pair of strikeouts and a groundout. The Ducks had two one with one out in the third, but couldn't advance either runner past second, then had runners on the corners with one out in the sixth but ended the inning with a fly out and groundout.

William Paterson finally broke the tie in the seventh after a leadoff double, sac bunt, and single to center, but the Ducks made sure the lead didn't last long. Krese led off the eighth with a walk and moved to second on a single off the bat of Eli Somers. After a Tonina sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Jack Reichlin reached on a single off the shortstop's glove, with Krese scoring the tying run on the play. Evan Pravato walked with two out to load the bases, but a strikeout ended another opportunity for the Ducks to re-take the lead.

After Stevens went down in order in the ninth, William Paterson walked it off in the bottom of the inning, a sacrifice fly plating the winning run after a leadoff double and sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third.

Inside the Box Score
  • Schilleci, the team leader in walks during his last season on the diamond (2023), drew three more free passes Thursday, pushing his four-game total this year to six, and extending his streak of games drawing at least one free pass to seven dating back to the end of the 2023 season.
  • Making his third appearance on the mound in five days, Joe Gonzalez tossed a season-high two innings, striking out one.
  • Liam DeRubertis notched his first hit of the season with a double in the third.
  • Starting for the second straight game, Reichlin finished 1-for-4 with the game-tying RBI in the eighth. He's hitting .400 (4-for-10) in three appearances this season.
  • Krese continued to be an on-base machine drawing two more walks, marking a fourth straight game reaching base safely at least twice.
Up Next: The Ducks finish a home-and-home with Rutgers-Newark this Saturday, March 1, at 11:00 AM from Weequahic Park. The Ducks slugged their way past the Scarlet Raiders, 15-2, in their home opener on Tuesday.
