Annville, Pa. – First-year
Jack Reichlin drove in five runs across two games as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team secured a pair of one-run victories over Lebanon Valley College on Saturday.
Reichlin tallied three RBIs in game one and added two more in the nightcap, helping the Ducks (6-7, 3-0 MAC Freedom) complete the sweep.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens wasted no time in the opener, striking for two runs in the first inning.
Eli Somers doubled with one out and came around to score on a
Jack Reichlin single to left-center.
Quinton Sterling followed with a sharply hit ball to short, which was misplayed and thrown into right field, allowing Reichlin to cross the plate. Meanwhile,
Jordan Fisse struck out three in the bottom half and added two more punchouts in the third as the Ducks held onto their 2-0 lead.
The Ducks broke the game open in the fourth, plating four runs on four hits.
Colby Ching sparked the rally with a double to left, and after
Evan Pravato drew a walk, Ching stole third to put runners on the corners.
Victor Schilleci delivered an RBI double to left-center, scoring Ching, while Pravato came home on a run-scoring groundout by Somers.
Liam DeRubertis followed with an RBI double, and Sterling capped off the frame with a hard-hit liner that deflected off the third baseman's glove, allowing another run to score.
LVC got a run back in the fourth on an RBI groundout, but Reichlin added to the Ducks' lead in the sixth, driving in DeRubertis—who had doubled two batters earlier—with a single. The Dutchmen responded with a five-run bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-6, but
David Finch shut the door in the seventh, striking out three to earn the save.
Lebanon Valley struck first in game two, scoring on a two-out RBI single in the second. The Ducks answered in the third, plating four runs on two hits. Ching worked a one-out walk and advanced to third as Pravato reached on an error. Schilleci tied the game with an RBI double to center, and Pravato scored on a balk. Reichlin capped off the rally with a two-run single to left-center, scoring DeRubertis and Somers for a 4-1 lead.
Sterling extended the advantage to 5-1 in the sixth with his first career home run, a solo shot to left.
Justin Doyle turned in a strong outing, striking out five over six innings before handing the ball to
Matt Villapiano, who tossed two scoreless frames while allowing just one baserunner.
The Dutchmen made things interesting in the ninth, launching a two-out, three-run homer to cut the deficit to 5-4. They continued the rally, putting runners on first and third after a single and an intentional walk. With the winning run 90 feet away,
Joe Gonzalez relieved
Jacob Buurman and induced a groundout to third to secure the sweep.
