Jackson, Miss. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to Millsaps College, 7-3, in the opening game of their Spring Break Trip on Tuesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks struck first in the second inning when
Kieran O'Brien led off with a walk. After advancing to third on a bunt, O'Brien scored on a wild pitch. However, the Majors responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring three runs against starter
Jonah Swarts. Following a fielder's choice, Millsaps strung together back-to-back hits to bring in the three runs.
Millsaps extended their lead to 7-1 in the fourth inning, adding four runs on four hits.
Will Staviski limited further damage by picking off a runner to end the frame. Stevens fought back in the fifth, pushing across two runs.
Colby Ching led off with a single and advanced on a bunt by
Evan Pravato. Louisiana native
Victor Schilleci then belted a two-run homer to right-center, cutting the deficit to four.
Liam DeRubertis walked, and
Luke Mahala was hit by a pitch, but a strikeout ended the inning.
The Ducks threatened again in the sixth. O'Brien led off with a double, and
Frank Tonina worked a five-pitch walk. Ching followed with a single through the left side, but O'Brien was thrown out at the plate attempting to score from second. After a flyout, Schilleci knocked a single through the right side, but Tonina was also thrown out at home, ending the inning.
Evan Carrier entered in the seventh and retired all three batters he faced, striking out two. In the ninth, Schilleci worked a full-count walk and advanced to second on a single to left field by
