Pearl, Miss. – Dylan Fishbough recorded a triple and a home run, but the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to Belhaven on Wednesday.
Fishbough drove in two runs for Stevens (6-9) in the setback.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Belhaven struck first, scoring on a single to center field in the bottom of the first. The Ducks were held hitless through five innings, but pitcher
Dean Qira benefited from solid defense in the bottom of the fifth, as Stevens turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame and keep the score at 1-0.
Stevens took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth.
Evan Pravato worked a five-pitch walk, and Fishbough launched a deep shot to center field, allowing Pravato to score from first. First-year
Aaron Wong followed with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing Fishbough home. The Ducks kept the pressure on with singles from
Victor Schilleci and
Eli Somers, but after a pitching change, a flyout and strikeout ended the inning.
Belhaven regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth, plating two runs on back-to-back doubles down each line to make it 3-2. The hosts extended their advantage in the seventh, scoring twice more on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.
Fishbough brought the Ducks back within two in the eighth, leading off the inning with a solo home run to left—his second career homer. Stevens threatened further, as Schilleci and Somers both walked and
Liam DeRubertis was hit by a pitch to load the bases. However, a strikeout and groundout ended the rally.
David Finch retired the Braves in order in the eighth, giving the Ducks one last chance in the ninth. Unfortunately, all three batters were retired in succession, sealing the win for Belhaven.
