Game Recap: Baseball |

Fisse, Doyle Dominant as Baseball Sweeps King's, Moves to 6-0 in MAC Freedom Play

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team got a pair of strong performances on the mound from Jordan Fisse and Justin Doyle, closing out a three-game Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom sweep of King's Saturday at Dobbelaar Field with a 5-1 win in the opening game of a doubleheader and an 8-1 win in the series finale.

Fisse went the distance in a seven-inning Game 1, striking out eight while walking just one, facing five above the minimum. Doyle went six innings in Game 2, also allowing just a single run while striking out nine.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
King's struck in the top of the first and held a 1-0 lead through 4.5 innings, while Stevens twice left two runners on, in the first and the fourth.

In the bottom of the fifth, Stevens finally broke through. Evan Pravato was hit by a pitch leading off and advanced to third on a Victor Schilleci double to deep right-center. After Eli Somers plated Pravato with a game-tying sacrifice fly, Dylan Fishbough reached on another hit by pitch, and Liam DeRubertis shot Stevens (9-9, 6-0 MACF) in front with a single. After Fishbough was thrown out at home on an attempted double steal, with two out, Jack Reichlin drove in DeRubertis with a double just inside the left field line, and Kevin Villares made it 4-1 with a single down the right field line.

After Fisse set King's (5-12, 1-5 MACF) down in order in the top of the sixth, the Ducks pushed across another run in the bottom of the frame, Pravato coming in to score after reaching on an error with Somers recording his second sacrifice fly in as many innings. Fisse again set King's down in order in the seventh, putting a definitive stamp on his day with back-to-back strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
After Doyle escaped a bases-loaded threat in the top of the first, the Ducks's bats went to work in the second.

With two out and nobody on, Villares worked a walk from an 0-2 count, Kieran O'Brien was hit by a pitch, and Aaron Wong plated both of them with a triple to center.

That 2-0 lead held into the sixth, when the Monarchs cut into the deficit with an unearned run, but the Ducks got the run back, adding a second in the bottom of the inning. After Villares and O'Brien drew back-to-back walks, with two out, Pravato doubled to right, scoring pinch-runner Jason Wu. Schilleci and Somers followed with another pair of back-to-back walks, with O'Brien being forced home on Somers' free pass.

After Matt Villapiano and Joe Gonzalez each tossed a scoreless frame, the Ducks put the game on ice in the eighth. Schilleci led off with a walk and scored on a Somers double. After Fishbough walked and stole second, DeRubertis singled in both runners, then stole second, third, AND home for a four-run inning and a seven-run lead. David Finch came on in the ninth and closed out the sweep with three strikeouts
