Castro, Alberici Named All-MAC Freedom

Hoboken, N.J. – Leyla Castro and Lucy Alberici of the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team were named to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Team on Tuesday.

Castro earned her third consecutive All-MAC Freedom honor, securing a spot on the First Team, while Alberici received her second straight recognition with a Second Team selection. The senior was previously named an Honorable Mention last season.

The junior guard, who was named the MAC Freedom Championship Most Valuable Player, led the Ducks with 14.0 points, 4.9 assists, and 2.6 steals per game. She ranked seventh in the conference in points per game, first in assists per game, and second in steals per game.

Castro started all 27 games at guard and opened the season with back-to-back 20-point performances against Dickinson (22 points) and Kean (23 points) before recording 24 points on 7-of-16 shooting against TCNJ. She notched her first double-double of the year against Hunter, tallying 18 points, 12 assists, and seven rebounds. She added another double-double in early February against Arcadia, finishing with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

After scoring a season-high 25 points in a win over DeSales on February 12, she averaged 21.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.5 steals in the two MAC Freedom Championship games. The Old Bridge, N.J., native matched her season high with 25 points in the MAC Freedom Championship Game against DeSales, adding six rebounds and six assists.

Alberici, who appeared in 23 games with 22 starts, followed closely behind Castro, averaging 13.9 points per game. The senior shot 41.6% from the field (109-of-262) and connected on 17 three-pointers. She also recorded 115 rebounds, 50 assists, and 26 steals.

The Hazlet, N.J., native was named MAC Freedom Player of the Week after scoring 20 points in back-to-back games against UMass-Boston and Fitchburg State in Florida. She played the full 40 minutes against Lebanon Valley on January 8, scoring a season-high 26 points while going 12-of-13 from the free-throw line. Alberici pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds against DeSales and scored 22 points against Misericordia on February 8. In the MAC Freedom Semifinals, Alberici tallied 15 points, knocked down 7-of-8 free throws, and contributed six assists and three rebounds.
