Baseball Clinches No. 1 Seed In MAC Freedom Tournament With Sweep Over Delaware Valley

Doylestown, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team locked up the No. 1 seed in the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament by completing a sweep of Delaware Valley University on Saturday.

The Ducks (23-11, 17-1 MAC Freedom) took the opener 6-2 before cruising to a 21-9 victory in the nightcap.

 HOW IT HAPPENED
Jack Reichlin led off the second inning of game one with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a bunt single by Kieran O'Brien. Frank Tonina drew a walk to load the bases, and all runners moved up on a wild pitch, allowing Reichlin to score the game's first run. After a walk and a strikeout, Eli Somers reached on an infield single, bringing home O'Brien. Dylan Fishbough capped the inning's scoring by reaching on a fielder's choice, extending the lead to 3-0.

Jordan Fisse was dominant on the mound, striking out the side in the second inning after allowing a leadoff hit-by-pitch. He added two more punchouts in the third before Stevens added a run in the fourth on a solo home run by Victor Schilleci. The Aggies got one back with a solo shot of their own in the fifth, but the Ducks responded in the sixth. Fishbough led off with a double and came all the way home on a fly ball by Liam DeRubertis, as the centerfielder was slow to get up after making the catch.

Stevens added one final run in the seventh. O'Brien led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a Tonina flyout advanced him to third, Colby Ching singled to right, scoring O'Brien. Delaware Valley hit another solo home run in the bottom of the seventh off Jacob Buurman to make it 6-2, but the right-hander closed out the game with three outs, punctuated by a strikeout.

The Ducks wasted no time in game two, scoring twice in the first inning. Somers singled with one out and moved to third on a double by Fishbough. A walk to DeRubertis loaded the bases, and Chip Krese hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Somers. The Aggies' pitcher then threw wildly on a pickoff attempt at first, allowing Fishbough to cross the plate. The Aggies cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, scoring an unearned run on a wild pitch.

Delaware Valley tied the game at two in the second before Stevens erupted for 11 runs on 10 hits in the fourth. Kevin Villares reached on an error to start the frame, and O'Brien followed with a single through the left side. Aaron Wong ripped a double to right, scoring one, and Schilleci followed with a two-run single. Singles by Somers and Fishbough loaded the bases, and DeRubertis cleared them with a three-run triple to right. He later scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-2. Krese beat out an infield single, and back-to-back triples by Reichlin and Villares pushed the lead to 11-2. Fishbough added another RBI single to cap off the barrage.

The Aggies responded with three runs in the fifth to cut the deficit to 13-6, but Stevens extended the lead with a DeRubertis sac fly and a Krese triple in the sixth. The Ducks added more in the seventh, including an RBI single by Wong and two additional runs scoring on a wild pitch. Delaware Valley got three back in the bottom of the seventh, trimming the margin to 18-9, but Stevens closed the scoring with three runs in the ninth on RBI hits from Robert Savely, Luke Mahala, and Tonina.
