HOBOKEN, N.J. –
Jack Reichlin hit a grand slam and
Eli Somers drove in three for the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team in a 9-2 win over Saint Joseph's – Long Island in non-conference action Tuesday night from Dobbelaar Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Stevens (24-11) put a runner on with two out in each of the first two innings but failed to score either time, the Golden Eagles put three of the first four runners on in the third, taking a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the frame,
Victor Schilleci was hit by a pitch, went all the way to third after a
Dylan Fishbough infield single + throwing error, and came in to score the tying run on a failed pickoff attempt.
SJLI (17-13) took the lead back, 2-1, in the fifth, though Reichlin threw out a runner at the plate, keeping the Golden Eagles from tacking on further. Reichlin would make a far greater impact at the plate in the bottom of the inning.
Schilleci led off with a single ahead of Somers who reached on a fielder's choice, with Schilleci advancing safely to second on a muffed throw by the Golden Eagles' shortstop. After
Chip Krese walked, with two out and an 0-2 count, Reichlin launched a line drive over the right-center field wall, giving the Ducks their first lead of the night, 5-2.
The Ducks tacked on another run in the sixth courtesy of a
Kieran O'Brien single followed by a Schilleci RBI double, then broke the game open in the seventh with a two-out, bases empty rally. Three straight walks to O'Brien,
Aaron Wong, and Schilleci loaded the bases for Somers, who unloaded them with a triple to left-center.
Neither side scored again, with
Will Staviski,
Joe Gonzalez,
Matt Villapiano, and
David Finch combined to retire 12 of the final 15 Golden Eagle batters between the sixth and ninth innings, each tossing a scoreless inning of relief, collecting seven strikeouts between them.
