Baseball Gears Up for MAC Freedom Tournament With Wild 15-12 Win Over Saint Joseph's - LI

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team geared up for the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Tournament with a wild 15-12 win over St. Joseph's – Long Island on Tuesday afternoon.

The Ducks trailed 4-1 after one, 9-5 after four, and 11-8 after six, but got five RBIs from Eli Somers, four runs, four steals, & three hits from Jack Reichlin, three hits and three runs from Chip Krese & at least one run, one hit, AND one RBI from four other players, scoring in eight different innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Somers launched his third homer in his last two games in the first, but the Golden Eagles scored four times in the bottom of the inning, grabbing an early lead. The Ducks came right back in the second, putting the first four batters on base, with Reichlin following Krese's double with an RBI version of his own, then after Kieran O'Brien walked and Aaron Wong singled to right, with one out, Victor Schilleci singled home Reichlin and Somers drove in his second run of the day with a game-tying sacrifice fly.

After the teams traded runs in the bottom of the second/top of the third, the Golden Eagles took a 9-5 lead with a four-run fourth. Reichlin got a run back in the fifth, doubling, stealing third, and coming home on a wild pitch. Stevens (26-13) pulled within a run in the sixth after Somers tripled in Kevin Villares, then stole home, but SJLI (22-14) got those runs right back in the bottom of the inning.

In the Stevens seventh, Krese led off with a double, then stole third ahead of a Reichlin walk. After an O'Brien sac fly plated Krese, Reichlin – who'd stolen second before the sac fly --, stole third. Wong walked and went first to third on a Villares RBI single, Reichlin scoring to once again pull Stevens within a run. Two batters later, Somers put the Ducks back in front with a sac fly scoring both Wong and Villares.

O'Brien provided some insurance with a Reichlin-scoring double in the eighth and Schilleci & Krese added additional run support with RBI hits in the ninth. David Finch closed out the wild three-hour, 12-minute affair in the bottom of the frame.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • For the first time this season, the Ducks won a game in which they allowed more than 10 runs.
  • Thanks in large part to Reichlin's efforts, Stevens stole a season-high 11 bases; Krese and Dylan Fishbough both finished the game with two. The team also matched a season-high with seven doubles.
  • For the seventh time this season, the Ducks hit at least .400 as a team in a game (15-for-36).
UP NEXT
The MAC Freedom Tournament begins for the top-seeded Ducks Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Dobbelaar Field against the four-seed Lebanon Valley.
