New Paltz, NY – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team topped New Paltz 5-2 in non-conference action on Wednesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks earned the doubles point by sweeping all three doubles flights, each by identical 6-2 scorelines.
Lorena Piegas and
Stephanie Untermeyer claimed the win at No. 1 doubles, while
Alix Dry and
Milagros Carbajal Diaz secured the victory at No. 2.
Gigi Arenas and
Emma Eguia completed the sweep with a win at No. 3.
Dry, the reigning Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Player of the Week, dominated her opponent at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-1. The Hawks responded with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles, narrowing the deficit to 3-2. At No. 2, Untermeyer dropped a tight match 6-2, 1-6, 10-6, allowing New Paltz to even the score.
Carbajal Diaz rebounded after dropping the first set 6-0 at No. 3, rallying for a 6-4, 10-6 win to reclaim the lead for Stevens. Arenas, competing at No. 6, took the first set 6-4, fell 6-4 in the second, then pulled away in the third-set tiebreak, winning 10-7 to clinch the match for the Ducks. Eguia capped the day with a gritty three-set victory at No. 5, prevailing 7-5, 2-6, 10-6.
