Hoboken, N.J. – The top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to No. 3 Arcadia University, 4-3, in the first game of the Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Championship Series on Saturday.
The Ducks (28-15) must win twice on Sunday to claim the MAC Freedom Championship and secure a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Scoreless through the first inning, the Knights broke through with two runs in the second. Jake Hendershot was hit by a pitch with one out, and Joshua Agriesti followed with a fly ball to left field.
Liam DeRubertis tracked the ball, but it carried over the temporary fencing for a two-run home run. Arcadia added another run in the third on an RBI single to left by Hendershot, making it 3-0.
Stevens threatened in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with two outs on walks from
Victor Schilleci,
Dylan Fishbough, and
Chip Krese. However,
Jack Reichlin flied out to right field to end the inning. The Knights extended their lead to four in the fourth when Derek Rivera hit a solo home run to right-center — a line drive that barely cleared the fence.
The Ducks got on the board in the fifth. After Fishbough reached on a fielder's choice and stole second, DeRubertis delivered a double down the left field line, scoring Fishbough. Stevens starter
Justin Doyle kept the Ducks in the game, retiring six straight after a leadoff walk in the sixth. Stevens had two runners on in the bottom half of the inning, but a flyout ended the threat.
Joe Gonzalez pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to keep the Ducks within striking distance. In the bottom of the frame, pinch hitter
Quinton Sterling opened with a double to left field. A walk to Schilleci and a groundout by
Eli Somers put runners on second and third with one out. After a pop-out, DeRubertis came through again with a two-run single up the middle. He then stole second, but Krese flied out to left to end the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- DeRubertis went 2-for-4 with all three of Stevens' RBI.
