EDGEWATER, N.J.– The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team won its fourth straight Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Championship on Saturday afternoon at the Edgewater Tennis Center, toppling Lebanon Valley, 4-0.
The Ducks did not drop a single match or even concede a set in singles.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The No. 2 doubles pairing of
Gigi Arenas and
Lorena Piegas trailed 1-0 and 2-1, but won the final five games for a 6-2 win. Just a few minutes after,
Milagros Carbajal Diaz and
Sude Aytekin clinched the point with another 6-2 win. The No. 1 match featuring
Alix Dry and
Stephanie Untermeyer was halted with Dry/Untermeyer leading 4-3.
After the Ducks took the first set in all six singles matches in 6-1 or 6-2 fashion, then opened multi-game leads on multiple courts, the afternoon turned into a battle of who'd finish their match first and who'd came the championship point. As for who finished first, Aytekin claimed that distinction, winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3. Moments later, Arenas picked up the team's third point with a 6-2, 6-1 win of her own. With Dry leading 5-2 at No. 1, Piegas leading 5-1 at No. 5, and Eguioa leading 5-3 at No. 4, the championship point was claimed by Eguia, closing out her match 6-1, 6-3.
Arenas was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, the first MAC (Commonwealth or Freedom) player to win Tournament MVP honors since 2016.
Up Next: The Ducks will await their Division III Championships fate, with the full bracket to be unveiled during the selection show at Noon on Monday. Links for live stats and video will be posted to stevensducks.com as they're made available.
