New Paltz, N.Y. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team was edged by SUNY New Paltz 2-1 in non-conference action Wednesday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks generated the first three shots of the contest, with newcomer
Lucas Mendes putting the lone attempt on goal in the 18th minute. The Hawks did not record a shot until the 26th minute and placed their first attempt on frame with 36 seconds remaining in the half, but goalkeeper
Sebastian Montoulieu denied Alex Wyant to keep the match scoreless at the break.
Stevens outshot New Paltz 7-3 over the opening 45 minutes, with the Hawks' keeper making two saves to preserve the deadlock.
Montoulieu was called into action again midway through the second half, turning away shots in the 62nd and 63rd minutes before adding another save in the 70th. Moments later, the Ducks were whistled for a foul in the box, setting up a penalty kick. Montoulieu guessed correctly and stopped Wyant's initial try, but the rebound fell right back to the forward, who converted to put the Hawks in front 1-0.
New Paltz doubled the margin in the 79th minute on a counterattack, when David Lamour finished low to make it 2-0. Stevens responded with just under 10 minutes remaining. Off a throw-in from
Matthew Murillo, the ball caromed off
Martin Fields and found Mendes, who poked a shot into the upper part of the net for his first career tally. Despite cutting the deficit in half, the Ducks were unable to record another attempt as the hosts held on for the 2-1 decision.
