Wilkes-Barre, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team earned a 58-53 victory over King's College in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom action on Wednesday night.
Katherine Bogutsky led Stevens (11-3, 2-1 MAC Freedom) with 12 points, while Cadie Lewis paced King's (8-6, 1-2 MAC Freedom) with 13.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens fell behind 9-2 early, as the home side erased an opening basket by
Leyla Castro with a 9-0 run. The Ducks responded with six straight points, with
Olivia Schubiger,
Audrey Kehoe, and
Fiona O'Boyle each finding the bottom of the net. After King's moved back in front by three at 13-10,
Isabella Duval beat the first-quarter buzzer, drilling a three-pointer as time expired to send the teams into the second quarter tied at 13.
King's scored four of the first six points in the second stanza, but Stevens closed the half on a 14-5 run. The Ducks limited the Monarchs to two made field goals over the final 6:54 of the quarter and just three baskets in the period. Bogutsky paced the Stevens offense with five points, punctuating the run with a pair of free throws to close the half.
The Stevens lead grew to double figures 1:20 into the third quarter as Kehoe converted a layup off a Schubiger assist. King's briefly trimmed the margin with a three-pointer at the 7:36 mark, but Stevens responded by stretching the lead to 14 during a 13-5 run.
Emily Marinelli and Schubiger accounted for all 13 Ducks points during the surge, as Stevens shot 5-for-8 over a 4:46 stretch. Bogutsky capped the third quarter with a layup, giving Stevens a 46-33 advantage heading into the final period.
Consecutive layups by O'Boyle pushed the margin back to 14 early in the fourth, but Stevens was held without a field goal for more than four minutes. King's closed to within 10 heading into the under-four media timeout before Bogutsky scored five points during a 7-2 Ducks run to extend the lead to 15. The Monarchs made one final push, trimming the deficit to five with a 10-0 run, forcing six Stevens turnovers in the process, but could not draw any closer.
