Hoboken, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team overcame a 10-point second-quarter deficit to earn a 56-51 Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom victory over DeSales University on Saturday afternoon.
Olivia Schubiger poured in a season-high 20 points to lead Stevens (12-3, 3-1 MAC Freedom), while Mikali Donmoyer paced DeSales (9-6, 3-1 MAC Freedom) with 13.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens fell behind early as the Bulldogs raced out to a 9-1 advantage. DeSales held the Ducks without a field goal for the first 6:28 of the contest, with Stevens shooting just 2-of-14 from the floor in the opening quarter. The Bulldogs carried an eight-point lead into the second stanza and extended it to 10 on the opening basket.
The Ducks trimmed the margin to five on a jumper from
Dorothy Loffredo early in the second before closing the frame on a 6-0 run to pull even at 19. Schubiger scored four points during the spurt, with
Leyla Castro adding two, but DeSales reclaimed a slim 26-24 lead heading into the halftime break.
Castro knocked down a three-pointer on Stevens' first possession of the third quarter to give the Ducks their first lead of the afternoon. DeSales responded by regaining a five-point edge, holding Stevens scoreless for nearly five minutes. Schubiger answered with six consecutive points to tie the game once again at 36. The Bulldogs closed the quarter with six of the final nine points to take a 42-39 lead into the fourth.
Stevens surged back in front midway through the final period, as Castro capped a 6-0 run with a steal and layup. After DeSales briefly tied the game,
Maya Abramson converted a layup with 4:01 remaining to restore the Ducks' advantage. DeSales evened the score at 51, but Loffredo calmly sank a pair of free throws to give Stevens a 53-51 edge.
Schubiger then came up with a steal on the ensuing possession, and offensive rebounds by
Fiona O'Boyle and Castro helped drain the clock. Forced to foul, DeSales sent Schubiger to the line, where she knocked down two free throws. Following a pair of DeSales misses,
Audrey Kehoe secured the final rebound to seal the victory.
