Men's Basketball Fends Off Arcadia, 82-79

Glenside, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team fended off a late comeback by Arcadia University in the second half, holding on for an 82-79 victory in Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom action on Saturday.
 
Tommy Scholl led the Ducks (12-7, 6-2 MAC Freedom) with 25 points, while Jamison Lynam poured in a career-best 37 for Arcadia (13-6, 6-2 MAC Freedom).
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The two sides traded points early, and with the score tied at eight, Stevens went on a 7-0 run over a 51-second span. Kyle Maddison began the surge with a layup, followed by a three from Anthony Loscalzo and a layup by Scholl. The Ducks kept Arcadia scoreless for nearly three minutes, opening up an eight-point advantage on a Scholl triple.
 
A three-pointer by the Knights halted the drought, but Stevens quickly regained momentum with a 9-1 spurt to build a double-digit lead. Maddison and Harmehar Chhabra delivered key baskets around another Scholl three, while Loscalzo added four straight points to push the margin to 15. Arcadia responded with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit in half.
 
Chhabra scored five consecutive points, including a three with 2:38 remaining, to extend the lead to 14 at 41-27. Maddison capped the half with a buzzer-beating layup off a Chhabra assist, sending Stevens into the break with a 48-34 advantage. The Ducks shot 60.7 percent (17-of-28) from the field in the first half, including 7-of-14 from beyond the arc.
 
Stevens opened the second half with eight of the first 11 points, highlighted by threes from Scholl and Maddison, to take a 19-point lead. With 15:09 remaining, Brendan Coughlan connected from deep to give the Ducks their largest advantage of the night at 22, 63-41. Arcadia answered with a 15-0 run over six minutes to tighten the contest.
 
Matt Leming halted the run with a three following a defensive steal, and another Leming triple along with a Scholl layup restored a double-digit cushion with 8:30 left. The Knights continued to battle back, scoring nine straight points to pull within four at 71-67.
Loscalzo responded with a three, but Arcadia trimmed the deficit to one possession on a Lynam triple with 3:12 remaining. 
 
Scholl, Coughlan, and Maddison each went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes to rebuild a six-point lead.After Arcadia went 1-for-2 at the line, the Knights forced a turnover and converted a layup to close within three with 47 seconds remaining. Stevens came up empty on its next possession, but after a timeout, the Ducks forced a missed three-pointer. The rebound went out of bounds as time expired, sealing the 82-79 victory.

  • All five Stevens starters finished in double figures.
  • Scholl, who has scored in double figures in every game this season, opened the contest 4-for-4 from three-point range and finished 8-for-14 from the floor with five triples.
  • Maddison and Chhabra each scored 14 points, with Chhabra adding eight rebounds and four assists.
  • Led by four steals from Loscalzo, Stevens recorded a season-high 10 steals.
