Swarthmore, Pa. – Resting most of its usual starting lineup, the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team dropped its regular season non-conference finale, 4-1, to Swarthmore on Tuesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the 5
th minute, a strong run by
Joey Bucchere led to an opportunity from
Lucas Mendes at the top of the box, but Swarthmore's Colin Crowe knocked the shot wide. Mendes was in the middle of the action again in the 23
rd minute, when he used strong body control to create an open look again from the top of the box, but Crowe again turned the shot aside.
Things remained scoreless before Swarthmore broke through with goals in the 40th and 43rd minutes to take a 2-0 halftime lead.
Stevens (5-3-3) continued to press after the break, with
Alejandro Alvarado and Mendes (a third time) denied by Crowe, with
Matthew Murillo hitting the crossbar. Goalkeeper
Sebastian Martinez made three saves in 74 minutes of action before exiting for
Aden Parikh.
After Swarthmore tacked on another, the Ducks finally broke through in the 84
th minute when
Zain Akhtar won possession and laid the ball back for
Chayse Stolarski, who fired a rocket from 20 yards out into the left side of the net past a diving Crowe. The Garnet added their fourth goal and the final score of the evening in the closing minutes.
