Scranton, Pa. – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team finished with more than a two-to-one advantage in shots and shots on goal but came up just short in a 1-0 loss at the hands of Marywood on Wednesday night.
Facing the MAC Freedom's newest member, Stevens (5-2-2, 0-1-1) recorded at least nine shots in each half while holding Marywood to nine shots for the match, but a late goal was enough for the Pacers.
How it Happened
Emerson Kekesi (twice),
Zain Akhtar, and Martin Field all had on-target attempts in the first 30 minutes, but Marywood keeper Ryan Schweigart kept all four out of the net. Kekesi had two more looks in the first half, with Schweigart saving one while the other hit the right post in the final minute of the half.
The Ducks' pressure continued into and throughout the second half, as
Luca Chirichiello,
Luke Carey,
Omar Martinez, and Aidan Waterman all forced saves from Schweigart between the 51
st and 64
th minute.
In the final 15 minutes of regulation, shortly after
Francesco Bonavita forced another Schweigart save, Marywood broke the scoreless draw after Stevens keeper
Bobby Boyke – who finished with a pair of saves – attempted to punch a cross out of the box, but the deflection found the foot of Marywood's Jack Zakovitch, who beat Boyke with a shot into the lower right corner.
Stevens had two more shots late, but Kekesi missed high and Schweigart stopped the final chance of the match for either side off the foot of
Lucas Mendes in the 90
th minute.
