DOYLESTOWN, PA. – Maya Abramson,
Leyla Castro, and
Fiona O'Boyle combined for 51 points as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team collected a 64-54 MAC Freedom road win on Wednesday night at Delaware Valley.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Castro had seven of the Ducks' first 11 points as Stevens (17-5, 8-3) built an 11-2 lead less than five minutes into the evening's action. O'Boyle and
Katherine Bogutsky each added a late layup, keeping the Ducks comfortably in front, 15-8, at the end of the quarter.
The lead shrunk to a single point, 18-17, less than three minutes into the second quarter, but an O'Boyle layup and five straight points from Abramson pushed the margin out to eight, 25-17, just shy of the midway point of the period. Castro put the Ducks up 28-22 following a three-point play with 2:35 to go in the half, but Delaware Valley tied things less than 90 seconds later. Stevens carried a 29-28 lead to the locker room with a late O'Boyle free throw. Castro and O'Boyle finished the half with a combined 18 for the Ducks.
The third quarter remained tight throughout, featuring four lead changes and neither side holding a lead bigger than three through the first eight minutes. The low-scoring quarter featured just 24 points total, with Stevens carrying a 42-39 to the fourth quarter. O'Boyle (four), Abramson (three), Castro, Bogutsky,
Olivia Schubiger (two each) all put points on the scoreboard in the period for Stevens.
Stevens built a pair of eight-point leads in the fourth, the second coming with 5:51 left, though the Aggies cut things back to a single possession less than three minutes later, 52-49 with 3:15 left. An O'Boyle free throw and
Isabella Duval three-pointer put the Ducks back up seven, 56-49 with 2:03 left on the clock. Delaware Valley cut it back to four with a three of their own, but Castro, O'Boyle, and Abramson went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final 55 seconds to seal the victory.
