HOBOKEN, N.J. – After missing the final 42 games last season due to injury,
Garret Wolf returned to the lineup with a bang, finishing 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in a 5-3 season-opening victory for the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team Sunday afternoon over in-state foe William Paterson.
Reigning MAC Freedom Pitcher of the Year
David Finch earned the win with 4.2 innings in relief of 2024 MAC Freedom Pitcher of the Year
Erik Sibbach, who allowed the Pioneers' only earned run of the day.
How it Happened
John Czernyk,
Chip Krese, and
Griffin Zitko combined for a critical 4-6-3 double play to end the first, keeping William Paterson off the board after loading the bases with one out, though the Pioneers did take a 1-0 lead on a leadoff home run the following inning.
Stevens tied things up in the bottom of the third when
Dylan Fishbough walked, stole second, then scampered all the way home on a
Quinton Sterling infield single.
Following a quiet fourth at the plate for both teams, the Pioneers again threatened in the fifth, putting two in scoring position with one out, knocking Sibbach out of the game, but Finch came in and got a pop out and groundout to keep things tied at one apiece. Perhaps still feeding off the momentum, the Ducks put the first crooked number of the season on the board in the bottom of the inning. Czernyk and Krese singled, and a Fishbough hit by pitch loaded the bases with nobody out. Following a pop out and a strikeout, Wolf came through with a tiebreaking two-run single back up the middle. In the midst of a
Justin Zachery at-bat, Wolf took off for second and remained alive in a rundown long enough for Fishbough to scamper home, just beating the throw for the second time in the game, putting the Ducks up 4-1.
An RBI groundout following a throwing error pulled the Pioneers back to 4-2 in the top of the seventh, but Wolf led off the bottom of the inning with a no-doubt shot to right-center, his first home run since April 30, 2024 and first at home since March 13 of the same year.
Finch allowed another unearned run in the ninth but, with the tying run at the plate, closed the door with his fifth strikeout of the day.
