Chestertown, Md. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team completed its trip to Maryland with a 4-3 victory over Washington College on Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens took a 1-0 lead after doubles, earning victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights.
Wei-Wei Lai and
Lorena Piegas opened the scoring with a 6-3 win at No. 2, before
Stephanie Untermeyer and
Gigi Arenas secured a 6-2 triumph at the bottom of the lineup.
Alix Dry and
Kaylee Hobbick battled at No. 1 doubles but were edged 6-3.
Dry bounced back in singles with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1, while Lai needed three sets to earn a win at No. 4. The sophomore claimed the opening set 7-5 before dropping the second 6-2, forcing a decisive third. Lai delivered in the final frame, winning 6-4 to give Stevens its third point of the match.
Washington College answered with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions, leaving the match to be decided at the No. 5 and No. 6 flights. Arenas dropped the first set 6-1 at No. 5 but responded emphatically, controlling the final two sets en route to 6-3, 6-3 victories. Both sets were tied at three before Arenas closed out each without dropping another game to clinch the match for the Ducks.
