Washington, D.C. – Erik Sibbach picked up his first win of the season and
Garret Wolf earned his first collegiate save as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team opened their three-game Washington, D.C. trip with a 3-2 victory Friday afternoon over Dickinson.
How it Happened
After a scoreless first, the Red Devils struck first via a two-out RBI double in the second, but Stevens got on the board an inning later.
Aaron Wong led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by
John Czernyk.
Chip Krese singled Wong to third, and
Dylan Fishbough brought him home with a sac fly to center.
Each team put runners on in both the fourth and fifth, but Sibbach and Dickinson starter Ben Myers allowed none of them past second base. After Sibbach again stranded a Red Devil on the bases in the top of the sixth, Stevens (3-0) jumped in front in the bottom of the inning.
Griffin Zitko led off with a walk and moved to second on an
Adam Barrington single. After
Tyler Wilke loaded the bases with another single, Wong walked again, this time forcing home Zitko; Barrington scored moments later on a wild pitch, putting the Ducks up 3-1, though Stevens did leave the bases loaded to end the inning.
The Red Devils got one back in the eighth and had the tying run on third, but Wolf, stranded him there with a two-out strikeout. In the ninth, Dickinson threatened once again, this time loading the bases with two out, but Wolf induced a game-ending fly out to right.
Inside the Box Score
- Krese and Wolf both hit safely for the third straight game, the only Ducks who have done so thus far this season
- After not recording one strikeout in 4.1 innings in the season opener last Sunday against William Paterson, Sibbach finished with six on Friday, his 15th career outing with at least that many
- Sibbach also picked up his 22nd career win, tying him with Scott Picerno for the career program record
- The Ducks stole at least three bases for the third straight game, something the team did not accomplish last season until the 16th, 17th, and 18th games of the year
Up Next
The Ducks wrap their D.C. trip tomorrow with a scheduled 4:00 PM first pitch against Catholic and a scheduled 7:30 PM first pitch against Salve Regina. The Salve Regina game was initially scheduled for Sunday but moved up a day due to inclement weather in the forecast.
