Baseball Rallies to Walk-Off Montclair State, 6-5

Washington, D.C. – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team erased a 5-0 fifth-inning deficit to knock off RV/RV Montclair State University, 6-5, during the opening day of the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy Jamboree on Friday.

Edward "E.J." Balewitz Jr. delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth for the Ducks (4-2).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Red Hawks (3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 advantage after two innings, plating a run in each of the first two frames. After both sides were held scoreless in the third, Montclair added to its lead with an RBI double in the fourth.

Stevens threatened in the home half of the fourth with two outs, as Griffin Zitko walked, Garret Wolf reached on an error, and Dylan Fishbough legged out an infield single. The rally was halted by a groundout.

Montclair tacked on two more runs in the fifth, as both runners scored on a fielding error with two down. Erik Sibbach limited the damage by inducing a lineout to right to end the inning.

The Ducks got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Pinch-hitter Robert Savely walked with one out, and after a walk to Chip Krese and a flyout, Quinton Sterling laced a double to center field to score both runners. Stevens added two more in the sixth. Wolf reached on an error and Fishbough dropped a bunt single to third. Pinch-hitter Vinnie Stigliano laid down another bunt, and an errant throw allowed Wolf to score from second. Jackson Wein followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home another run and cut the deficit to one.

Sibbach worked around a leadoff single in the seventh, inducing a 6-3 double play before retiring the side on a comebacker. In the bottom half, Krese was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch. Sterling tied the game at five with an infield single.

A walk and a sacrifice bunt ended Sibbach's outing in the eighth, and Dawson Guerard entered in relief. After issuing a walk, Guerard struck out Montclair's second and third hitters swinging to keep the game tied.

Connor Herlihy took over in the ninth and retired the Red Hawks in order, aided by strong defense. Stigliano ranged to his right to make a sliding stop and fired a low throw that was scooped by Adam Kobayashi at first, who followed with another clean pick on the next batter.
Wein led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to center and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Justin Zachary. After Krese was intentionally walked, Balewitz lined a single to left to score Wein and complete the comeback.
