HOBOKEN, N.J. – Leyla Castro and
Olivia Schubiger combined for 43 points on Wednesday night in a 73-58 win for the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team over King's in MAC Freedom play at Canavan Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens (15-5, 6-3) started the game up 9-3, thanks in large part to forcing three King's turnovers in the first two minutes. King's reeled off the next six to tie, but the Ducks took the punch and came back with a bigger one, putting the next 11 on the board, getting baskets from five different players.
The final basket of the first quarter went to the Monarchs, who pulled back within four, 23-19, early in the second, but the Ducks again withstood the mini-charge and responded with a bigger one, pushing the lead back out to 11, 30-19. The lead grew to 14, 35-21, before King's worked the deficit down to 11, 38-27 at the half.
Maya Abramson finished the opening 20 with a stat sheet-stuffing seven points, four rebounds, two steals, and two blocks in just eight minutes; Castro hit three of her last four after starting 0-for-3 from the floor.
After hitting just two three-pointers across the first 20 minutes, Stevens hit a trifecta in the first four minutes of the third quarter, matching the Monarchs' field goal total for the quarter, as the lead grew back to 14, 53-39, heading to the fourth.
Stevens saved perhaps its best for last, shooting 56.3 percent from the floor in the fourth – their highest mark of the game – with Schubiger contributing 10 of the team's 20 in the period.
