HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team roared back from double-digit deficits in both the first and third quarters, outscoring Misericordia 53-34 in the second half during an 87-75 win on Saturday in MAC Freedom action from Canavan Arena.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Misericordia made seven of nine from beyond the arc in the first quarter, opening a 24-9 lead six and a half minutes in, but Stevens (16-5, 7-3 MACF) worked the margin back under 10 late in the period, with
Leyla Castro hitting two free throws after being foul behind the arc with less than a half-second on the clock, as the Ducks went to the second quarter down just six, 27-21.
Stevens capped an 18-3 run, coming all the way back to tie at 27 early in the second quarter, capped by an
Isabella Duval three-pointer. The Ducks were unable to grab their first lead of the game, however, as Misericordia re-built a 41-34 lead at the half. Castro finished the opening 20 with a stat sheet-stuffing eight points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Stevens fell behind by 11 just shy of the midway mark of the third quarter, but
Katherine Bogutsky took over with a trifecta of three-pointers, pulling the Ducks back within two.
Emily Marinelli made it 12 straight for the Ducks with another three and Bogutsky capped a 15-0 run with her fourth three in less than four minutes. The Ducks maintained a slim lead, 61-60, heading to the fourth.
After hitting 76.9 percent from the field (71.4 percent from three-point territory) in the third, Stevens capped its monster second half with a 50 percent clip from the floor in the fourth, including hitting 4-of-6 from deep. Misericordia briefly went back in front, 67-66, but Castro and
Isabella Duval hit back-to-back threes, staking Stevens to a lead that did not dwindle under three over the final four minutes.
