Middletown, Conn. – In a back-and-forth battle featuring six ties, including two in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter, the No. 7 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team fell 14-13 in overtime Wednesday afternoon to No. 13 Wesleyan.
How It Happened
The first half played out in vastly different 15-minute segments. The first quarter was controlled by the goalies as
Michael Jannotte and Conor Selfridge each made four saves of the teams' 11 combined shots on goal, with
Connor Moore and
Adam DeCristofaro each scoring for Stevens as the Ducks took a 2-1 lead to a second quarter dominated by offense.
DeCristofaro opened the period with his second of the day and
Hudson Rocheville added on less than a minute later. DeCristofaro completed a hat trick at the 10:00 mark, but Wesleyan came back from a 5-2 deficit to tie on three separate occasions before taking an 8-7 lead to the half; Mathew Pergola and
Will Labartino had goals No. 6 and 7 for the Ducks, as the two sides scored on 12 of their 13 shots on goal in the period.
Stevens conceded the opening goal of the third quarter, but roared back with four straight, seizing an 11-9 lead heading to the fourth.
Joe Leone (twice), DeCristofaro, and Pergola all found the back of the next for Stevens in the third while Jannotte made six saves.
In the fourth, Labartino put the Ducks up 12-9, but again, Wesleyan came back to tie at 12 with just over four minutes remaining. After Chris Cicarello put Stevens back in front, 13-12, the Cardinals knotted things once again with under 90 seconds left, sending the game to overtime, the Ducks' second overtime game in four days following an 11-10 win at Union last Saturday.
In the extra session, Stevens won the opening faceoff and had two shot attempts, though one sailed wide and one was blocked. After a shot clock violation on the Ducks, Wesleyan cleared and, as the clock ticked under one minute, scored the game-winner.
