HOBOKEN, N.J. – Three big innings, two early in Game 1 and one late in Game 2, helped the Stevens Institute of Technology sweep a Sunday doubleheader from Union (NY) on Sunday, with the Ducks claiming a pair of one-run victories, 9-8 and 7-6.
How It Happened (Game 1)
The Ducks' merry-go-round at third base was in full motion in the first two innings. With two out and the bases empty in the first, five straight Ducks reached, two via hit by pitch and two via walk, with three coming in to score, the most noteworthy coming when
Garret Wolf stole home.
With one out in the second,
John Czernyk walked and
Chip Krese & E.J. Balewitz Jr. both singled to load the bases, which
Adam Barrington took advantage of, doubling down the right field line, plating Czernyk and Krese. Two batters later, Wolf put the final stamp on the hot start with an opposite field three-run homer.
Between the third and sixth, only one of 13 Stevens hitters reached base safely as the Garnet Chargers came all the way back to tie at eight, but in the seventh, pinch-runner
Ethan Simpson stole second after Balewitz Jr. walked, then came around for the go-ahead run on a Wolf single up the middle.
Wolf's day was far from over as the two-way came in from center field to pitch in the eighth, and promptly retired all six batters he faced for the save.
How it Happened (Game 2)
Looking to flip the script from Game 1, Union led 2-1 after two, 5-1 after four, and 6-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth in Game 2, but Stevens (6-4) was not about to go quietly.
With one out in the inning,
Griffin Zitko singled, Wolf doubled, and
Quinton Sterling walked to load the bases.
Tyler Wilke singled to right, scoring Zitko and Wolf, with Sterling moving to third, and Wilke taking second on the throw back in.
Jackson Wein was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Krese was hit by another to force home Sterling. Next up stepped Balewitz Jr. who delivered the biggest of the game, and possibly the entire day, with a bases-clearing triple to left, shooting the Ducks in front.
After a scoreless seventh, Union threatened to re-take the lead in the eighth, but
Connor Herlihy stranded the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position with a strikeout, then with two on again in the ninth, Herlihy induced a game-ending fly out to close out the sweep for the Ducks.
