Bayonne, N.J. – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis team clinched the No. 1 seed in next week's Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom Tournament with a 6-1 victory over Lebanon Valley College on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ducks (13-3, 6-0 MAC Freedom) swept doubles play while dropping just two games.
Stephanie Untermeyer and
Gigi Arenas blanked their opponents 6-0 at the No. 2 flight, while
Alix Dry and
Kaylee Hobbick matched them with a 6-0 triumph at No. 3.
Wei-Wei Lai and
Lorena Piegas completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win at the top spot.
Stevens carried the momentum into singles, winning five of the six flights. Dry rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles, while Piegas posted a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at the second spot. Untermeyer battled to a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3, and Hobbick cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 decision at No. 5.
Lai added the final Stevens point at No. 4 singles, taking the opening set 6-2 before dropping the second 6-3. She responded by winning the match tiebreak 10-3.
Aliona Heitz forced a third-set tiebreak at No. 6 after taking the second set 6-4, but was edged 10-6.
UP NEXT
The Ducks will host the MAC Freedom Tournament Semifinals on Tuesday, facing either Misericordia University or DeSales University at 4:00 pm.
