No. 9 Field Hockey Dominates 2-1 Victory Over New Paltz

Hoboken, N.J. – Aleah Dinmore and Lauren Flynn each found the back of the net in a 2-1 victory for the No. 9 Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team over New Paltz on Wednesday afternoon from the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens (4-1) controlled the action through much of the match, recording at least five shots in all four quarters while holding the Hawks shotless in three separate quarters.

The Ducks opened the scoring just past the midway point of the first quarter when Jenna Piantieri converted off a feed from Taylor Brooks after the team's first two shots of the match were turned aside by New Paltz (2-3) goalkeeper Grace Grant, who made four additional saves in the second before the Hawks tied things up with three minutes left in the half.

The second half opened much like the first, with the Ducks relentless in their quest to find the back of the net, forcing another five saves from Grant, part of a nine-shot third quarter, though none found the back of the cage as the score remained 1-1 heading to the fourth.

Just past three minutes into the fourth quarter, the Ducks finally broke the tie when, off a penalty corner, Kylee Scherer fed Jess Kopernick on the left wing from the top of the circle. Kopernick went low, with the shot rolling right under Grant's left pad. Over the final 11+ minutes, Stevens remained in control, generating two more shots and three more corners without conceding any of either.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Ducks finished with a 26-3 advantage in shots and an 18-2 advantage in on-target attempts. The shots, shots on goal, and margins in both (+23, +16) were all season-bests
  • Kopernick scored for the first time since scoring twice (including the last-minute game-winner) in the season opener against York. She now leads the team with three goals this season.
  • After recording 16 assists last year (tied for second-most in program history), Brooks dished out her first assist of the season.
UP NEXT
Stevens heads to Vassar on Saturday, September 19, for a 12:00 start with the Brewers.
