Jess Kopernick and
Kylee Scherer each found the back of the cage, but the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team fell to Vassar College 3-2 on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Stevens (4-2) generated the only two shots of the opening quarter.
Jenna Mayer had the Ducks' first opportunity in the 11th minute, but her attempt was cleared away with a defensive save.
Lauren Flynn earned Stevens' first penalty corner just over two minutes later, leading to a shot on goal from
Molly DiCampli, but the attempt was saved as the contest remained scoreless through 15 minutes.
The Ducks continued to apply pressure early in the second quarter.
Emma Trout hit the post less than two minutes into the period before Kopernick and
Jenna Piantieri each put attempts on goal. Kopernick eventually broke through at the 20:14 mark, scoring her fourth goal of the season to give Stevens a 1-0 advantage. Stevens continued to create opportunities following the goal, with DiCampli and Piantieri each recording shots and the Ducks earning two penalty corners during the quarter. Vassar, however, pulled even with 52 seconds remaining in the half to send the teams into the break tied at one.
Stevens held an 8-2 advantage in shots over the opening 30 minutes.
Vassar took its first lead of the afternoon at the 37:13 mark before adding another goal with 1:06 remaining in the third quarter to move ahead 3-1. Stevens earned two penalty corners during the period, while Kopernick recorded the Ducks' lone shot of the frame. The Ducks quickly cut into the deficit in the fourth quarter. Taylor Brooks had an attempt cleared away with a defensive save. Scherer collected the ensuing opportunity and found the back of the cage at 47:07 for her first goal of the season, pulling Stevens within 3-2.
Julianna O'Sheal entered in goal to begin the fourth quarter and kept the Ducks within striking distance, making four saves over a span of less than four minutes midway through the period. Stevens earned one final penalty corner with 3:55 remaining but was unable to produce the equalizer as Vassar held on for the 3-2 decision.
