Women's Basketball Falls to No. 8 Scranton, 69-38

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Junior guard Katie Dougherty scored a game-high 16 points to lead eighth-ranked University of Scranton to a 69-38 win over Stevens Institute of Technology on Tuesday in a women’s basketball game at Canavan Arena.

With the score knotted at 9-9 with 14 minutes left in the first half, Scranton (3-0) used a 13-0 run over the next seven minutes to take control.  Dougherty scored three consecutive baskets off steals and junior guard Kate Pierangeli added five points, capping the spurt with a 3-pointer at the 7:30 mark that gave the Lady Royals a 22-9 lead.

Scranton pulled away in the second half, limiting Stevens (0-3) to just 24.0 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes.

The Ducks started strong against their second ranked opponent in three games as they traded baskets with the Lady Royals over the first six minutes.  Four different players scored for Stevens.

The Ducks were led by junior guard Aracely Cruz (Union City, N.J./Union Hill) who had 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.  Seniors Vanessa Williams (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) and Mia Molfino (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) added six points each.  Williams also pulled down six rebounds.

For Scranton, Dougherty was joined in double figures by Pierangeli who finished with 14, and sophomore forward Tara Gemmel who added 12 points.  Senior forward AnneMarie Russo scored six points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds.

Stevens returns to action on Saturday, November 30, with a 6 p.m. game at New Jersey City University.
