Megan Haughey Steps Down As Deputy Director of Athletics and Head Women's Basketball Coach

Accepts Position of Director of Athletics & Recreation at Rutgers-Newark

Hoboken, N.J. – Megan Haughey announced she will be stepping down as the Deputy Director of Athletics and Head Women's Basketball Coach to accept the position of Director of Athletics & Recreation at Rutgers-Newark.

"Stevens has been an incredibly special place for me over the past 14 years," Haughey expressed. "I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to work alongside so many outstanding colleagues and to coach such driven, talented, and resilient young women. The relationships built here—with our student-athletes, staff, and the entire Stevens community—are what I will cherish most. I want to sincerely thank Russ Rogers for believing in me and giving me this opportunity all those years ago, and to everyone who made this journey so meaningful and rewarding."

Haughey has served Stevens with distinction since 2012, leading the women's basketball program while also holding the roles of Deputy Director of Athletics and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA).

"Meg is a highly effective administrator who is very well prepared for this exciting new opportunity at Rutgers-Newark," stated Assistant Vice President for Athletics & Recreation Russell Rogers. "She has been an exceptional mentor for our coaches and staff and helped the student-athletes in so many different ways. We are forever grateful for her work and Meg's impact will continue to be felt at Stevens for years to come. Without question, Rutgers-Newark has made a home run hire and I look forward to watching the progress of the athletic program there under Meg's leadership."

Haughey departs Stevens as the winningest coach in program history, amassing a 232-122 overall record. Under her direction, the Ducks evolved into a consistent conference contender and national presence, earning five NCAA Tournament appearances (2014-15, 2015-16, 2017-18, 2022-23, 2024-25).

Her 2015-16 squad delivered one of the most memorable seasons in program history, advancing to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 and finishing with 23 victories, one shy of the program record. Haughey was recognized for her efforts that season as both the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Coach of the Year and the D3hoops.com Upstate Region Coach of the Year.

Most recently, Haughey guided Stevens to the 2024-25 MAC Freedom Championship, as the Ducks made a remarkable postseason run as the No. 3 seed, defeating No. 2 Arcadia and No. 4 DeSales to secure the program's first conference title in the league. The championship capped a milestone season that also included Haughey's 200th career victory, achieved in a conference win over Lebanon Valley on January 8, 2025.

Prior to Stevens' transition into the MAC Freedom, Haughey led the Ducks to sustained success in the Empire 8 Conference, capturing two regular season championships and two tournament titles, while reaching the conference championship game four times in a seven-year span. Her teams consistently performed at a high level in conference play, including an 82-26 mark over a multi-year stretch.

Individually, Haughey mentored a host of decorated student-athletes, including All-Americans, All-Region honorees, and major award winners. Kaitlyn Astel earned D3hoops.com All-America honors in 2016-17 and was named MBWA Division III Player of the Year in 2015-16. Jess Broad garnered First Team All-Region honors and MBWA accolades, while recent standouts Leyla Castro and Lucy Alberici continued the program's tradition of excellence with All-Region and All-MBWA recognition in 2024-25.

The Ducks also claimed numerous conference major awards under her leadership, including multiple Players of the Year, Rookie of the Year honorees, and conference Coach of the Year recognition for Haughey in both the Empire 8 and MAC Freedom.

Beyond competitive success, Haughey's program was defined by its commitment to academic excellence. Stevens earned multiple Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top-25 honors, including a No. 2 national GPA ranking during the 2020-21 season. The program maintained a 100 percent graduation rate among four-year student-athletes and produced more than 30 Stevens President's List selections during her tenure.

In her administrative capacity, Haughey played a vital role in the overall operation and strategic direction of the department. As Deputy Director of Athletics and SWA, she served on the senior management team, contributed to departmental decision-making, and supported initiatives aimed at enhancing the student-athlete experience and promoting equity across all programs. Her leadership in this space was recognized nationally with the NADIIIAA Emerging Athletic Administrator Award in 2020-21.

She has a way of bringing out the best in people and encouraging them to grow. She's someone who genuinely cares about the people she works with and that's what makes her impact so meaningful. While she will be missed, we're all so excited to see the difference she's going to make at Rutgers Newark."

"Coach Haughey was the heartbeat of our program, making an impact far beyond the X's and O's. She inspired every player to be their best while building a strong, inclusive culture that extended well beyond the court. Though she will be deeply missed at Stevens, we can't wait to see all the great things she accomplishes at Rutgers Newark."

She went beyond just coaching the sport by supporting players personally, encouraging them during difficult moments, and creating an environment where everyone felt comfortable and respected. Her leadership helped build strong relationships among the team and made players feel like they belonged both on and off the court."
Sugar Williams (Student-Athlete, 2024 – Present)

"I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have been coached by Coach Meg over the past four years. From my very first visit to campus, I knew I wanted to be challenged and mentored by someone like her. Coach Meg's energy, leadership, and commitment, not only to the women's basketball program, but to the entire athletics department will be missed tremendously. While this chapter is coming to a close, I have no doubt that Coach Meg will find success in her new role as athletic director. Coach Meg, thank you for everything you have done and we wish you nothing but the very best in your next adventure."
