Women's Basketball Overcomes 21-Point Deficit in 65-58 Win Over Centenary

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – Senior guard Mia Molfino (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) scored a season-high 20 points as Stevens Institute of Technology overcame a 21-point second half deficit to earn a 65-58 win over Centenary College on Saturday in a women’s basketball game at Reeves Gymnasium.

Stevens (2-4) trailed 47-26 with 18:57 left after Centenary forward Jamilya Speaks scored the first two baskets of the second half.  Stevens senior guard Aracely Cruz (Union City, N.J./Union Hill), held scoreless in the first half, then scored five straight points to ignite a 15-0 run.

One free throw by forward Vicki Williams gave Centenary (0-6) a 52-48 lead with 7:49 left.  Stevens then held Centenary scoreless for more than seven minutes.  Molfino, who had 14 points in the second half, scored six points during a 12-0 run.  Her two free throws with 49 seconds left gave the Ducks a 60-52 lead.  She then iced the game with four straight free throws in the final 18 seconds.

Centenary, which shot 50 percent (16-for-32) in the opening half, built a 43-26 lead at the break.  The Cyclones were perfect from three-point range in the opening half, going five-for-five.  Stevens held an early 17-11 lead following a Molfino basket at the 11:46 mark.  But Centenary limited Stevens to just three baskets over the final 11 minutes of the half, including a five-minute scoreless stretch.  Williams capped the half but connecting on a 40-foot shot at the buzzer to give the Cyclones a 17-point lead.

Stevens held Centenary to just 15.4 percent shooting in the second half (4-for-26).  Senior forward Vanessa Williams (Forest Hills, N.Y./Townsend Harris) recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 17 rebounds.  Junior forward Sheryl Cwiekalo (South Plainfield, N.J./South Plainfield) added 10 points – all in the first half.

Speaks led Centenary with 19 points while also pulling down eight rebounds.
